Silent films and inferential thinking

I thought this was a great clip to use to highlight how we "read" film and as an opening to discussing what it means to infer.  If you are in class with me now, there is a good chance you will see this one again!

  1. I hope you will continue to pursue this idea, Petra! I'd be interested in collaborating with you somehow on this, because using silent films in my classroom back in the 90s was part of what sent me down the new literacies line of inquiry.

  2. This has gotten me thinking quite a lot about how we “read” different media – wordless picture books, silent films, fonts (Jen’s post). I don’t think it is just interpretation. I think there is a component that is reading. I’m grappling with how reading and interpretation are different entities. Maybe I have to be “literate” in the media or genre to be able to first “read” it, and then interpret it.
